Palm Tree Baptist Church History

One of the greatest visions of our forefathers was committing themselves to the Lord. For some 140 years Palm Tree has had many dedicated followers of Christ.

This church came into being without a building. It started as a bush shelter with just a faithful group of dedicated souls. Through much hard work and faith, our forefathers were blessed by God in the year 1877 to begin Palm Tree(a building erected on adjourning land donated by the late Frank and Rosa Parker).

The church was organized by devoted members under the leadership of Rev. T. F. Fanner. Seceding Rev. Fanner’s pastorship were great pastors as: Rev Umphlette, Rev. Cuffy, Rev. R.R. Rodgers, Rev. Stallings, Rev. Davis, Rev. Charity, Rev. Elliott, and Rev. Milton Lee. Rev. Anthony Sommerville serves as our current pastor.

Many renovations have taken place at Palm Tree over the years in order to better accomodate its members. Generation after generation has made improvements on the handiwork of fathers’ past such as new windows, roof, indoor facilities, pews, pulpit, baptismal pool, air conditioning, fellowship hall, pastors study, choir/usher rooms, piano, organ, chairs, brass candle holders and other items were added through the years to improve the church’s appearance and help in uplifting the Word of our Lord and Savior. The great vision of our pastor and church is for God to bless this body with a new edifice to increase our worship, praise, and service to Him.

Ministries that were added and many continue to be active to this date include: Trustee Board, Choirs(Senior, Young Adult(now known as the Inspirational Choir), Youth, Mass Choir, Usher Board, Missionaries, Pastors’ Aide, Hospitality,Youth Department, Men’s Ministry and several Sunday School classes.

Palm Tree has been blessed, by the grace of God, with 7 sons and 1 daughter to enter the ministry. They include: Rev. Charlie Wiggins(1927), Rev. William Hampton(1981), Rev. Michael Smith, Rev. William Wiggins(1983), Rev. Sherman Lassiter(1991), Rev. Ray C. Bagley, Rev. Dallas Sharpe(1994), Rev. Trina Jones(2003), and Rev. Audra Wallace whom was added to our flock in 2007.
